Dawn Dish Soap Alternative: Non-Toxic Swaps That Still Cut Grease

The best Dawn alternative in our catalogue is ECOS Free & Clear Dish Soap. It is EPA Safer Choice certified, lists nine ingredients, and leaves out fragrance and dye. If you want one concentrate that replaces several bottles under the sink, Branch Basics is the second pick.

This page is a spoke of our best non-toxic dish soap guide, which ranks the full set of dishwashing picks. Here we stay on one question: what to buy if you are moving away from Dawn.

What the Dawn label lists

Dawn is a strong degreaser, and nothing below disputes that. The question is what is printed on the bottle.

Food Lion's listing for Dawn Ultra Original Scent reproduces the ingredients as: water, sodium lauryl sulfate, C10-16 alkyldimethylamine oxide, alcohol denat., deceth-8, C9-11 pareth-8, sodium chloride, PPG-26, PEI-14 PEG-24/PPG-16 copolymer, fragrances, phenoxyethanol, methylisothiazolinone and colorants.

Three of those entries explain most swaps:

  • Fragrances. An unspecified fragrance line can cover many components, and the label does not break them out.
  • Colorants. Dye has no cleaning job, so we prefer a dye-free formula.
  • Methylisothiazolinone. A synthetic preservative that is a recognized skin sensitizer for some people, which matters if your hands react to cleaning products.

Dawn also sells a Free & Clear line. Giant Food's listing for the Lemon Essence version states "Free of Dyes" and "0% dyes, phthalates and chlorine added," but its ingredient list still reads fragrances and methylisothiazolinone. Listings differ by scent and by retailer, so read the bottle you are holding. We did not lab test Dawn. These are label disclosures as retailers reproduce them, not test results.

What we look for in a swap

We used the household rubric. Seek EPA Safer Choice certification on the exact product, a full ingredient list, plant-derived surfactants and no fragrance or dye. Avoid phthalates, triclosan and unspecified fragrance. Certification applies to a single product, not a whole brand, so check the mark on the bottle.

You can browse every vetted option on the household recommendations page.

The swaps, ranked

Only two of these are liquid dish soaps. We would rather say so than pad the list. The rest cover the other half of washing up.

1. Best direct swap: ECOS Free & Clear Dish Soap

ECOS Free & Clear is a fragrance-free, dye-free liquid built on coconut-derived surfactants: water, sodium coco-sulfate, cocamidopropylamine oxide, lauramine oxide, coco betaine, tetrasodium glutamate diacetate, citric acid, phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin. It is EPA Safer Choice and Leaping Bunny certified.

Trade-offs. Phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin are synthetic preservatives. It comes in one 25 fl oz size with no refill, and ECOS sells scented variants under similar names, so confirm the listing says Free and Clear.

2. Best concentrate: Branch Basics Cleaning Essentials Kit

Branch Basics is a dilutable plant-based concentrate with seven ingredients, no fragrance and no added preservatives. It is MadeSafe and Leaping Bunny certified and also handles counters and laundry.

Trade-offs. The upfront cost is higher than a bottle of conventional soap, and you fill and label your own bottles.

3. Best for the dishwasher: TrulyFree Dishwasher Detergent

TrulyFree Dishwasher Detergent is a four-ingredient powder with no phosphates and no chlorine, and it is EPA Safer Choice certified. Sodium percarbonate is an oxygen bleach, so keep the powder dry and away from children.

4. Best plastic-free scrubber: SUBEKYU Dish Brush

The SUBEKYU Dish Brush uses natural sisal bristles with no plastic. Use it on pans, and replace the head when the bristles flatten.

5. Best sponge swap: Natural Home Plant-Based Kitchen Sponges

Natural Home sponges are biodegradable cellulose with no microplastics. They suit glasses and non-scratch surfaces.

6. Best for the sink area: Blueland Foaming Hand Soap Refill Tablets

Blueland's tablets are not dish soap, but most kitchens keep hand soap at the sink. They are fragrance-free and dye-free, and carry EPA Safer Choice, Leaping Bunny and Cradle to Cradle certification. You need a foaming dispenser.

7. Best for counters: ATTITUDE All Purpose Cleaner

ATTITUDE All Purpose Cleaner is EWG Verified with four ingredients. It is a counter cleaner, not a dish soap, and it is not for unsealed wood or natural stone.

8. Best towel: HONEST WEAVE Organic Cotton Kitchen Towels

HONEST WEAVE towels are GOTS certified organic cotton in a waffle weave that dries dishes without paper towels.

What did not make the list

Dawn Free & Clear. The Lemon Essence listing we checked includes fragrances and methylisothiazolinone, so that scent does not meet our fragrance-free standard. Other scents and the unscented bottle may list differently, and we have no complaint about how it cleans.

Antibacterial dish soaps. Under the rubric these fail when the active ingredient is triclosan. Plain soap and hot water do the work.

FAQ

Does a non-toxic dish soap cut grease as well as Dawn?

Dawn has a reputation for grease. Plant-derived surfactants such as coco betaine lather less, which can feel weaker even when the dishes come clean. Hot water and a brush close most of the gap on baked-on pans.

Is Dawn Free & Clear fragrance-free?

It depends on the scent. The Lemon Essence listing we checked shows fragrances in the ingredients, so read the label on the exact bottle.

Can I wash dishes with Branch Basics?

Yes. The concentrate is designed for dishes when diluted. Follow the dilution on the bottle.

What does EPA Safer Choice mean on a dish soap?

EPA reviewed each ingredient against its criteria. It describes the formula, not a guarantee about every use.

The takeaway

For the simplest swap, buy ECOS and replace your sponge. For fewer bottles, buy Branch Basics. Read the ingredient line on whatever you buy, because formulas change. For the wider picture, see our room-by-room cleaning guide.
